Boystown 3 Two Nick Nowak Novellas
By Marshall Thronton
Reviewed by Theresa

With each new Boystown, I am more and more drawn into Nick Nowak’s world. He’s a smart, confident detective with a backwards kind of charm that reaches out and grabs me as a reader. I find myself very impatiently waiting for each new book in the Boystwon series just to see what new trouble Nick is going to find himself into. Boystown 3 was no different. I already want to stand over the author until he delivers the next one.

Each of these books has been a collection of cases Nick solves, while revolving closely around his personal life. Only a short time elapses from the end of one case to the next, but I always find it hard to write a review about the individual stories. That is a credit to the author because, at least to me, it reads as one novel and not individual stories. I don’t feel you can read one story without needing to read the one before or the ones after.

The Boystown stories are not love stories, so if that is what you’re after, I have to discourage you from reading them. Nick is handsome and promiscuous to the point of making me cringe (at times) but the stories are set in the very early eighties before AIDS had a name and the true reality of its threat was known. If a reader can’t keep that in mind, they are going to be turned off. I was, at first, but as I said in the beginning, Nick’s charm kept me reading. Where his life is headed and what happens next for both Nick and those he is close to has always kept me coming back for more.

I am very much looking forward to the next Boystown. I’ve been told this one will be one novel and not individual stories and I can’t wait. I hope everyone enjoys Boystown 3 as much as I did.

Book Description: Private Investigator Nick Nowak is back in two novella length mysteries set in Chicago during the early 1980s. In Little Boy Boom, Nick’s car explodes when a thief attempts to steal it. Realizing the bomb was meant for him, Nick sets out to discover who wants him dead only to find that the list of possible suspects is longer than he’d like. When he begins to run out of suspects he wonders if the bomb was truly meant for him.

In Little Boy Tenor, Nick is asked to find the murderer of a church choir’s star tenor, while at the same time his friend Ross asks him to find out the truth behind his lover, Earl Silver’s mysterious death. As he juggles the two cases, he becomes increasingly disturbed by what he learns.

Something Shattered by Bailey Bradford
Reviewed by Theresa

Caden and Jesse will win your heart from the first introduction.

I’ve never been afraid to leave my own home before but after reading Something Shattered, I felt as if it was me making those agonizing steps to the mailbox. Bailey Bradford had me in Caden’s mind, feeling the fear he felt and the courage it took to get beyond it.

Something Shattered is sad, romantic, funny and steamy hot. If the antics of Loopy don’t make you laugh, I can’t imagine what will. Jesse is a true hero. Most men would run from the problems that Caden has but not Jesse. He runs toward Caden and doesn’t look back.

You don’t just read Something Shattered, you live it.

Theresa

Teaser: A vicious attack left Caden a shattered, broken man. His physical injuries will heal, but the emotional ones seem insurmountable — until his yappy poodle, Loopy, introduces him to his sexy neighbor Jesse.

Book Description: Jesse Martin never knew what it meant to belong anywhere until he moved to the small town of El Jardin, NM. Something about the town called to him, and he set about doing what he could to fit in. If that meant keeping some parts of himself separate, tucked away from prying eyes, then that was what he’d do.

Caden Tomas moved to El Jardin to escape the memories of a vicious attack that left him a shattered, broken man. The physical wounds would heal, but the emotional ones seemed insurmountable. Unable to leave his home for more than a brief walk to the mailbox, Caden’s isolation was just one more torment that ate away at his hopes of ever recovering.

Two men, each with their own personal demons, living only yards across from one another. Each is fascinated by the other, but unable to find a way to breach the problems that keep them apart. The solution comes in the form of one yappy little poodle, Loopy. His frequent escapes from Caden’s yard gives Jesse a reason to approach his neighbor, and form a tenuous bond that will heal their wounds and maybe, just maybe, end their lonely nights.

Duck! by Kim Dare
Reviewed by Theresa

If you loved The Ugly Duckling as a child, then as an adult you’re going to love Duck! by Kim Dare even more. Of all the stories from my childhood adapted to romantic fiction for adults, Duck is definitely one of my favorites.

Ori pulled at my heart strings and had me falling in love with him from the start. I found myself wanting to jump into the story and beat up the bullies for him. I cheered when Raynard stepped in and put them in their place and cheered even more when he took Ori home with him. As the relationship between the two grew, I quickly fell all the way in love with them both.

I loved the dynamics of this relationship. It might have started out has your average D’s relationship but it surely didn’t end that way. Ms. Dare credit has given us a truly incredible story in Duck!. I was so happy for Ori and at the same time I was crying both Ori and Raynard. Their worlds were changing and for a time, I really was afraid that Raynard was going to leave. I can’t express enough how  much I enjoyed this book and encourage everyone to read it.

A side note: the cover, done by cover artist Les Byerly, is absolutely beautiful and totally sexy.

Life isn’t easy for Ori until he comes to the attention of a high ranking hawk shifter. Then the only question is, is Ori really a duck—and what will his new master think when the truth eventually comes out?

Three of a Kind Book 3: Full House by Jess Dee
Reviewed by Theresa

I can count on one hand with fingers left over the number of authors that can deliver a ménage story that is not only erotically hot but emotionally believable as well. Jess Dee is at the top of the list.

While I might have felt the pace of the relationship moved a bit fast, it wasn’t an unbelievable pace. I thought the characters needed to be together. Often I find myself rooting more for the men to just say the heck with it and run off into the sunset together in the “two men, one girl” romance, but not in Full House. I was actually praying the three of them figured it all out. Of course, it is a romance, so that prayer was answered.

Full House is romantic and passionate. You don’t want to miss book three in the Three Of A Kind series by Jess Dee. It is a must read in this readers opinion. While each book stands on its own, I recommend reading them as a series. You’ll enjoy them more!

Book Description: A full house beats a pair any day.

Three of a Kind, Book 3

It’s been a long, lonely business trip for diamond dealer Max Ashberg. He’s missed his lover like crazy, and he’s come to the realization that he’s ready to take the next step: nominate himself to be Trev’s new housemate. Except when he gets to Trev’s place, there’s someone living in “his” room. A woman—with the face of an angel.

Six weeks shouldn’t make a huge difference in a man’s life, but in that time lawyer Trev Greenfield has realized two things: He wants much more than a standing Friday night “date” with Max. And he’s falling heart-over-head for his new housemate, potter Grace Miles.

Grace never meant to fall for Trev, but when a power failure turns their chemistry into live electricity, there’s no denying the spark. There’s also no denying the shock when Grace discovers a naked man in her new home.

With Grace poised to run and Max teetering between confusion and growing lust for the delicious possibilities, Trev has his hands full trying to hold the two loves of his life together…before they slip through his fingers. Leaving them all with shattered hearts.

Where The Heart Is
By Elizabeth Silver and Jenny Urban
Reviewed by Theresa

Where The Heart is has everything needed for a hot erotic weekend. One cabin—check. A blizzard—check. No electricity—check. Three hot men—triple check. For a quick erotic read, it works, because the sex was sizzling. Unfortunately, the connection between the characters was not.  The “happily ever after,” felt forced and that ruined the story for me. For three friends that have been friends forever to move to lovers and committed partners all in one weekend wasn’t believable. As much as I wanted to just concentrate on the weekend itself, the future was too much a part of the story for me to ignore.

If all you want is an erotic read, Where The Heart Is has that covered but if you want something more meaningful, I’d give this one a pass.

Breathe by Sloan Parker
Reviewed by Theresa

I became quite the fan of Sloan Parker with the release of her first novel, More, which had me totally captivated, so reading Breathe was a must. I can tell you that Ms. Parker has grabbed my attention yet again. Breathe is a bittersweet novel that had me in tears. I will admit the story started out a bit slow for me—the first chapter or two didn’t draw me in as quickly as I might have liked—but it was well worth it to keep turning the pages. I was soon sitting on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next. I haven’t read too many books that kept me guessing until the very end but Ms. Parker did just that. Breathe is full of mystery, suspense and hot sex. And fair warning, Breathe is full-box-of-Kleenex type of story.

Wooing Master Jones by Amber Kell

The most romantic bit of wooing I’ve read in awhile, you’ll fall in love with Stephen and Victor as quickly as they do each other, I know I did.  Amber Kell treats us to a uniquely written tale that turns the tables on the normal getting to know you stage in a new Master/Sub relationship and will leave you begging for more. Love at first sight has never been so much fun to watch/read about as it is in Wooing Master Jones.

I have never been disappointed in an Amber Kell novel and Wooing Master Jones is no different a definite must read for all Amber Kell fans and great introduction for first timers.

Anything Goes Book 1: Lust & Fae by Joyee Flynn
Reviewed by Theresa

I love paranormal romances and Joyee Flynn’s are among my favorites. Lust and Fae is the first in a new series, Anything Goes, and it starts off with a bang.

Ms. Flynn weaves an erotically intriguing tale with the creation of lust demons and Gabe the virgin Fae. I’m a sucker for a man in distress and his savior and Gabe and Cal are exactly that. Cal is a hundreds-of-years–old, lonely lust demon and when he meets Gabe, he develops some very protective feelings he hasn’t experienced before.  This leads to romance with moments of humor that drew me in.

Lust and Fae delves into an area that some might find unrealistic or disturbing but I have found I really enjoy and actively look for similar stories. In fear of giving too much of the story away, I am just going to say that Lust and Fae is a paranormal romance with a twist that I encourage any paranormal fan to read.

Book Description: Cal has been alone all his life. After all, lust demons aren’t known for their ability to fall in love. For centuries, he’s used his gifts to help others find the happy ending he felt he would never have. When a virgin fae, Gabe, walks into his club, Cal is immediately struck by the little sprite’s good looks. Knowing the fae’s natural magnetism could ignite a riot, Cal immediately rushes Gabe out of the club, only to find out he was sent to be Cal’s mate. But Gabe is in trouble. The evil halfers seek fae essence to become human. Knowing Gabe is in danger sets off every protective instinct within Cal. Can a lust demon defy convention and find his happy ending with an innocent fae?

Commanding Acquisitions by Christine d’Abo
Reviewed by Theresa

Commanding Acquisitions by Christine d’Abo is part of the 1-800-DOM-Help series from Ellora’s Cave. I thought this one started out a little more lighthearted than the first, but it was no less emotional. The story is a contemporary with just a touch of the mystical surrounding the origins of Club Unfettered and 1-800-DOM-Help.

When Simon calls 1-800-DOM-Help, it is originally to make sure it isn’t scam – or so he tells himself. I had to laugh when he finally asks, “Don’t suppose you can find me a sub with a business degree? I’m having business issues too.” Simon was admitting, not only to himself but to someone else, that he was lonely and needed help. It was at that point Ms. D’Abo had me hooked. I love a man who isn’t afraid to admit what he needs. The BDSM is not too intense. Simon is a strict but gentle Dom. He and Gavin are made for each other but before they can live happily ever after, Gavin has to work though a few issues of his own.

Commanding Acquisitions was a fast read at ninety-six pages. If you enjoy BDSM you’ll enjoy this title.

River Of Need by Shayla Kersten
Reviewed by Theresa

I really enjoyed River of Need. Having read both Hidden Force and Hidden Hands, I was excited to revisit the characters from those books and read Kyle’s story.

River of Need starts out with an emotional punch that continues throughout the story. Shayla Kersten packs a lot emotion into ninety-nine pages. This story left a lump in my throat and teaches a valuable lesson in love. Dustin’s life turned from good to bad in almost the blink of an eye because he wasn’t honest but with the love and trust of the one person he betrayed you just know that there will be a happily ever after at the end of Kyle and Dustin’s story. Shayla gives us a story that is both romantic and true to itself, without pulling the reader from the fantasy.

I have always enjoyed what I’ve read from Shayla Kersten and River of Need is no different. For a quick emotionally believable story, pick up River of Need. River of Need is a standalone story but for the best enjoyment I recommend reading Hidden Force and Hidden Hands.

Book Description: Two years after their breakup, Detective Kyle Shelton didn’t expect to see his lying, cheating, closeted ex. Especially not behind bars for prostitution. Bailing him out is one of the stupidest things Kyle has done in a while. Although letting his ex back in his bed probably ranks higher on the dumbass scale.

Dustin Eldridge’s lies about his sexual preferences have left him with nothing. Literally. He’s lost his home, his family, his job and, worse, he’s lost Kyle. On the streets, with no one to turn to, he’s resorted to selling his body to survive. Then Kyle—of all people—comes to his rescue. Dustin can’t fix the past but maybe there’s hope for a future.

Unless Kyle really believes Dustin added serial killer to his resume, along with hooker.

Note: For maximum reader enjoyment, we suggest also reading Hidden Force (Tony and Ryan) and Hidden Hands (David March), in which these secondary characters were heroes.

Love Thy Neighbor by Jack Greene
Reviewed by Theresa

I love reading Jack Greene and I love m/m/m so I couldn’t resist when I saw the blurb for Love Thy Neighbor. Once again, Jack Greene gives us another great romance and boy is it hot hot hot! I definitely have a new Jack Greene favorite. I’ve already read this story twice and a third is in the cards.

I’m not sure if this one qualifies as a gay for you or maybe, in this case, gay for them. Either way, it worked for me. The trio of Quinn, Ash and Gerard is a heady experience to say the least. While I would surely classify Love Thy Neighbor as erotica, there is a plot, which is one of the reasons I love Jack Greene’s stories so much. He never fails to deliver a romance with lots of heat and still keep you focused on the story itself. But I couldn’t help but wish this had been a full length story because I wanted more. Quinn, Ash and Gerard drew me in and I wasn’t ready to let them go.

For a quick erotic tale with substance, Love Thy Neighbor is a must read in this readers opinion!

Mari Carr Is In The House…

Hello friends and happy new year to everyone!!

*

I’m here today with friend and author Mari Carr. The seventh and final book in her Wild Irish Series, Any Given Sunday, releases today at Ellora’s Cave and I thought we’d do a short interview with her.

*

Say hello Mari ;)

*

*

Mari Carr: Hello Mari. :)

*

T: *rolls eyes* I walked right into that one.

*

*

EAR – T: How did you come up with the idea for the Wild Irish Series?

*

Mari Carr: I knew I wanted to write a series because I love them. One of my favorite series at Ellora’s Cave is Madison Hayes’ Calendar Girls. I thought the idea of coming up with a Miss for every month was clever and I tried to come up with a “theme” for my series. I remember the nursery rhyme, Monday’s Child. From there, the pub and the family just sort of evolved!

*

EAR – T: Do you have a favorite book from the series?

*

Mari Carr: Oh no…really? I have to say. Hmmm…I’m cheating and picking two. I’m partial to Saturday Night Special because it was the first time I went for a no-holds-barred approach to romantic comedy and because (don’t tell the other Collins kids) Riley was my favorite character. My other favorite was Friday I’m in Love. Ewan turned out to be **in my mind** the most romantic on the Collins boys. Believe me, I didn’t see that coming, but when it did, I was like “Wow, I love him!”

*

*

EAR – T: Which set of characters gave you the most trouble?

*

Mari Carr: Jeez…gonna say it. Any Given Sunday is the most difficult book I’ve ever written in my life and for a lot of little reasons that sort of added up until I was totally freaked out. First of all, it was the last book in the series and I wanted it to be special. Secondly, I’d really hemmed myself in on some plot points in the previous books that challenged me—the fight scene in Come Monday, Lauren’s presence as Sean’s girlfriend in Saturday Night Special two years prior to the events in Any Given Sunday. It was a tough puzzle to put together. Finally, I couldn’t make myself say goodbye to these characters. I cried when I typed the words The End. Literally crawled into bed and cried!

*

*

EAR – T: What is the hardest part of writing this series?

*

Mari Carr: Keeping all the little plot points straight as well as managing to revisit older characters. I think the presence of the family was important to all the stories, but damn…there were a lot of kids in that family! It was hard to work them in sometimes.

*

*

EAR – T: Are you a plotter or a pantser? Why?

*

Mari Carr: I plotted the first three books because I had to. In order to get the series approved, I needed synopses and the first book written. After that, I think it was a combination of the two. Most of my books start with a couple of characters and a conversation. I let the words flow until I hit that “place” where I realize I need direction. Usually after two or three chapters in, I start mapping out my course and figuring things out. This works for me.

*

*

EAR – T: Does the Wild Irish have a soundtrack? What are the songs?

*

Mari Carr: Oh yeah. Music tends to play a big role in terms of “getting me in the mood” of my stories. With seven books—all of them named after songs—the list is substantial!

*

And So It Goes by Billy Joel

Leave Me Alone by Helen Reddy

Ruby Tuesday by The Rolling Stones

Come Monday by Jimmy Buffett

I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing by Aerosmith

In Spite of Ourselves by John Prine and Iris DeMent

Champagne Supernova by Oasis

I Got You Babe by Sonny and Cher

Release Me by Wilson Phillips

Gettin’ Jiggy Wit’ It by Will Smith

December 1963 by Jersey Boys

Friday I’m in Love by The Cure

Beyond My Wildest Dreams by Little Mermaid Broadway cast

I Gotta Feeling by Black Eyed Peas

Forever by Chris Brown

*

*

EAR – T: If they turned Wild Irish into a mini-series who would you want to play your characters?

*

Mari Carr: All of them??? Oh man…it would take years for me to decide this! Sean Connery as Pop—LOL. No, not really! I’m so bad at this. Honestly, I have no idea.

T: That’s is ok I just tossed that one in there to make you sweat. I know I’m EVIL ;)

*

*

EAR – T: In Sweet Thursday Lily, Justin and Killian meet again at their 10 year class reunion. Have you attended any of your class reunions? What did you learn?

*

Mari Carr: I’ve NEVER gone to a class reunion. Do you believe it? I was one of those kids who just sort of got through high school and once I left my classmates behind, I didn’t look back. The irony of this is my day job. I’m a high school librarian!

T: this is something I totally understand I was looking over an old high school year book and for the life of my I’m not sure who half the people where that signed it ;) lol

*

*

EAR- T: Tell us about the absolute BEST fan letter you have received.

*

Mari Carr: I am the luckiest writer on earth because I have readers who aren’t shy about writing me letters after reading one of my books. I’ve gotten some beautiful emails. I will say my BEST experience as a writer occurred at RAW this past September. I was standing next to Jayne Rylon when a lovely lady walked up to her and said, “I heard Mari Carr’s here and you know her. Do you know where she is now?” Jayne looked at me and pointed. The lady literally screamed and said, “I love your books!” I felt like one of the damn Jonas Brothers. It was AWESOME!

*

*

EAR –T: Do you draw inspiration for your characters from real life? Any fun stories you could share?

*

Mari Carr: I wrote a story called Do Over that is available at Carina Press. It’s very loosely based on an event that happened in my best friend’s life. For her 25th wedding anniversary her husband took her back to their hometown for a walk down memory lane. I patterned the story after her experiences. She’s the one who told me to write the book, but as she said, “you’ll have to add a lot of that sex stuff to make it good!”

EAR – T: Ever wanted to put someone in your books just to “kill them off”?

*

Mari Carr: NO!

Shhhh, you’re giving away my secrets. Hee hee.

T: I just knew I wasn’t going to get the juicy answer I wanted *pouts*

*

*

EAR – T: If you could meet anyone in the world who would it be and why?

*

Mari Carr: Gerard Butler. He melts my butter!

*

*

EAR – T: Do you have any guilty pleasures?

*

Mari Carr: OMG—I have too many! Listening to music, eating potato chips, playing Hearts on the computer, drinking Jim Beam and Diet Coke, reading my Kindle under the flannel sheets in my comfy bed…should I go on?

*

T: What No Wine?

*

*

EAR – T: What are your favorite TV shows? Or should I ask what happened on Glee last week ;) lol

*

Mari Carr: You know me so well. I’m in a total depression right now because Glee is on hiatus. It’s the only show I watch and honestly, I’m one of those people who could live quite happily without a TV in the house.

T: My family would revolt at the mere thought.

*

*

EAR – T: What’s next for you? Another big series?

*

Mari Carr: As luck would have it, YES! I’m co-writing a series with Jayne Rylon called the Compass Brothers. It’s about four brothers who think all their dreams will come true far from the family’s ranch. However, life (and love) soon sends them straight back to the place where they left their hearts—home. Northern Exposure is the first and it will release at Samhain on March 15. The second story, Southern Comfort, comes out in July.

*

*

EAR – T: Before we wrap this up you want to tell the readers here today where they can find you?

The Go Between by A.B. Gayle
Reviewed by Theresa

I really enjoyed the first book I read by A.B. Gayle so when I ran across The Go Between I wanted to read it, of course I love reading a m/m ménage. I enjoyed the dynamics in this story two roommates both secretly having the hots for each other but both afraid to say something to the other. Enter the best and you have the makings for one hot evening and A.B. Gayle delivered on that even in a short 22 pages I felt the emotional awkwardness of the situation and that made the story all the more enjoyable.

I have to say that as a rule I prefer my m/m/m stories to have a triple happily ever but in this case Zack is exactly what the title says The Go Between – a Christmas Cupid. But, it worked for me. The author didn’t try to sell me a romantic future that wouldn’t fly. I was sorry the story was so short only because I would have liked to see more of Jake and Sam as a couple, but for a quick short holiday read I was not disappointed.

Carnal Connection by Berengaria Brown
Reviewed by Theresa

This was a great read. M/m/m is one of my favorite categories and Carnal Connections delivered what I like. It was short but light, funny and erotic. Staying away from anything too serious, the author concentrates on the now, leaving the reader with the hope that there just might be a happily ever after in the future for these three while not making that a focal point. I would very much love to see another story starring these three in the future because I’m all for my happily ever after tied up in pretty red bows, but as an appetizer Carnal Connections delivers.

Carnal Connections would be a great short erotic bedtime story and it will send you off to dreamland with a smile.

Use Your Illusion by Jade Falconer
Reviewed by Theresa

You have to admire a man who knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to go after him even if it does require a little cross dressing.

I’m not particularly fond of cross dressing stories but the blurb for Use Your Illusion caught my attention and once I started reading, kept it. Jade Falconer delivered a quick quirky read that had me laughing and reaching for a tall glass of ice water. I appreciate that it didn’t end in happily ever after. That would not have been believable to me but for a quick sweet romance with some hot man lovin’, it was very satisfying.

If you’re looking for a little romantic comedy with just enough drama to make it all worthwhile, I’d recommend Use Your Illusion.

Needing Harte by Marilu Mann
Reviewed by Theresa

Just so that authors know, promotional material works. I had never heard of Marilu Mann before but I was given a swag bag from some good friends who went to Romanticon. A postcard from author Marilu Mann was in among all the goodies. So when I ran across the review request for Needing Harte the author’s name is what caught my attention. I checked it out and I was very pleasantly surprised with Needing Harte.

I am very picky with my BDSM novels and Marilu Mann impressed me. She had the right mix of dominance and romance that appealed to me. Harte wasn’t exactly a reluctant dom but he certainly needed a nudge in the right direction, especially if he wanted Ramey. Marilu Mann did a good job of making me feel both Harte’s fear of his new yearnings and Ramey’s fear that the new man he wanted wasn’t going to be able to admit he was the dominant that Ramey needed. I fell in love instantly with both Harte and Ramey. Needing Harte is a little more than light bondage and really never crosses over into hard-core BDSM.

I did feel as if I was walking into the middle of a story already going on. The murder scenario seemed to be already set so I am confused if Needing Harte is the first in this series or one of a continuing line. I didn’t feel as if the murder was solved by the end of the book so I am curious if the storyline will continue in the next book. As I understand it, this is supposed to be part of a multi-author series 1-800-DOM-Help. I was trying to find out more about it at Ellora’s Cave but couldn’t find the other books in the series. But this is an author and a series I will be on the lookout for in the future. Marilu Mann has made a conquest in me.

Book Description: Part of the 1-800-DOM-help series.

Harte Donovan has a problem. A murder leads to him wanting a sexy stripper bound and naked in front of him. He can’t let his secret desires ruin his career as a detective. But when he’s given a mysterious business card, Harte discovers a side of himself he intends to fully embrace.

Ramey Nichols strips for a living and he’s not willing to pretend to be something he’s not. When this sexy submissive meets the closeted cop and unwitting Dom, something has got to give. That something might just be Ramey. Ramey knows what he wants, and more than that, finds himself Needing Harte.

Talker by Amy Lane
Reviewed by Theresa

A good friend brought author Amy Lane to my attention, so when I saw Talker, I thought I’d check her out. I wasn’t disappointed.

The story is told from Brian’s POV. It alternates between the past and present and at times, this confused me a bit. But there was just something about Brian and Talker that kept me from becoming frustrated. Those two sold this story. Talker isn’t what you would expect. You’d think with the tattoo and piercings he’d be this big bad ass but it is a mask, not the real him. Talker is more sensitive and emotionally needy than the face he shows the world and that puts him in a dangerous situation.

I had to laugh when Brian finally faces the fact that yes, he is gay and Talker is the man he wants. The way Brian goes about proving to Talker that he is the man Brian loves is so out of character for him. The author is very descriptive so it was so easy to visualize what Brian looked like.  It was a bit bittersweet that Brian had to go to such lengths to prove to Talker he was worthy of his love, but beautifully done.

I liked that the author didn’t give this a happily ever after ending but a happy for now, since they are college students and Talker is definitely in need of some help before these two can move onto a happily ever after. It made the whole story more believable. I would love to read a sequel to Talker, I really hope that Amy Lane treats us to one in the future.

Theresa

Book Description: Tate “Talker” Walker has spent most of his life hiding his scars under a bright punk facade, and until he sat next to Brian Cooper on a bus, it worked. But Brian has spent his whole life being the invisible man, and he’s used to looking below the surface. What he sees in Talker is a fragile and lovable human being.

Brian is outwardly straight, but Talker is desperate for love, and when Talker’s behavior leads to some painful consequences, Brian is forced to come out of his closet—in dramatic fashion. He’ll do anything to make sure Talker sees that he’s the Prince Charming Talker has always needed.

Jaynell’s Wolf by Amber Kell
A Wizard’s Touch Book 1
Reviewed by Theresa

“Wow” is the first word that comes to mind after reading Jaynell’s Wolf by Amber Kell. I was thoroughly entranced. I have always enjoyed Amber Kell’s stories and Jaynell’s Wolf was no different. Amber Kell has a talented imagination and she knows how use it!

I enjoyed the instant attraction between Jay and Thomas. Jay’s slight fear of being bonded again to someone was evident but the love he feels for Thomas outweighs that fear. I liked that Thomas was willing to let Jay work though those fears without being demanding. Thomas easily won me over when he freely admitted that his mate was just as much Alpha as any wolf. Jay has an infectious personality that wins over not only Thomas’ Alpha and brother, but everyone around him. Except one. And that is a battle Jaynell has to fight with the help of his pack and new friends.

Jaynell’s Wolf is a fast-paced enjoyable read, a delightful mix of romance, humor and magic, with enough reality to make it all believable. I love the magic in Amber’s books. I am very much looking forward to reading more of A Wizard’s Touch series. If Jaynell’s Wolf is anything to go by, the whole series promises to be extremely entertaining. And if the next one is about the two I hope it is, then it should prove to be just as good or even better than Jaynell’s Wolf. This is definitely one of those series where you can be sucked into the lives and loves of all the characters easily.

Book Description: At his dead father’s bequest, Jaynell Marley attends an esteemed wizard school hoping to finish up his education. Caught by A.B. Gayle
Reviewed by Theresa

I loved Caught. Having never read A.B. Gayle before I had no clue what to expect  but I was quickly drawn into the story. I could see something like this really happening just the way Ms. Gayle set it up for us. The story flowed easily from one scene to the next without any bumps in the road. A very emotional read, Ms. Gayle knows how to combine a subject that is all too prevalent in today’s world and still give us a story that was light hearted and entertaining without taking away from the seriousness of the issues. She had me in tears and rolling in laughter.

I would recommend Caught. It is a great story and well worth the time. A.B. Gayle is going on my list of new to me authors to keep an eye on. I want to stress that this story touches upon some issues that may be very emotional to some readers. Although it is a touching romance, she touches on the seriousness of suicide. For this I applaud the author. She took on an issue not often written about in romance and did it beautifully.

Theresa

Book Description: When Daniel’s invalid landlady asks for his help preventing a possible suicide from the clifftop near their home, he doesn’t want to disappoint her. So he grits his teeth, picks up his camera, and goes out to play the Chinese tourist. He’s done it before: befriended the lonely, lured them away from the danger zone, acted as a safety net.

This time, the figure staring out to sea is way out of his league, his complete opposite, the sort of man Daniel’s always admired from afar. Then the attractive Taylor turns the tables and lures Daniel out from behind the safety of his camera, and as Daniel finds himself fighting off an attraction he can’t deny, he realizes he’s in danger of being caught. Will the camera expose truths about himself that he wants to keep hidden?

Serendipity by Mallory Path
Reviewed by Theresa

For a short erotic tale, Serendipity was a great read I really enjoyed. Everyone dreams of getting a night with their favorite star—I know I do! Serendipity is a story most all of us can relate to as well as get lost in. I liked how the author set the scene at the coffee shop. It was done so well you could easily see this happening in real life.

My inner romantic would of course have preferred a happily ever after, but in truth probably wouldn’t have believed it. So I was content with how this story ended, leaving room for the readers imagination to continue the story after the last page or for a sequel if the author chooses to visit Jake and Russ in the future. I know I’d be right there.

Theresa

Book Description: Jake Brown has always been content with his life on the family farm.

Illusion Of Night by C.J. Black

Illusions of Night is definitely not one of my normal choices. A mix of historical and paranormal, it was a very good story but I found myself putting it down to come back to it later often.

The premise is similar to that of a traditional historical romance minus the paranormal magiks. The hero kidnaps the heroine (or in this case hero) and holds her hostage until either the family submits, she sees things from his point of view or yep, you guessed it, they fall in love. I stopped reading those types of stories a long time ago, because they just didn’t keep my interest. So while I didn’t like the whole romantic set-up the magiks were detailed and attention getting and enjoyed that aspect a lot.

If you like traditional historical romance with paranormal/magiks elements, you’ll enjoy Illusions of Night. But if historical romances are not your favorite type of reads, I’d have to say give Illusions of Night a pass.

Boystown 2 by Marshall Thornton
Reviewed by Theresa

I really enjoyed Boystown 2. Marshall Thronton has a way telling a story that keeps you on your toes. I enjoyed Boystown 1 but I thought Boystown 2 was even better. I liked Nick a lot more than I did in the first book. He came across real and less of a player and I found it easier to relate to Nick this time around.

All three stories in Boystown 2 are equally enjoyable. While Nick does appear to be trying to make things work in his relationship with Bert Harker—the cop he meets in the third story of the first book—the situtation is complicated by the appearance of his ex-lover. Nick still has a hard time saying no to any offer that comes along. There is still a lot of promiscuous sex—not as much as in book one or maybe I just became more accustomed to Nick’s ways ;)

I think Marshall Thronton falls into the category of acquired taste. You are either going love or hate the Boystown stories. As a rule, Boystown isn’t what I’d usually enjoy but for some reason Nick Nowak has captured my attention and kept it. I very much want to find out what adventures Nick is going to find himself in next. I was upset with how the third story ended. It was a cliffhanger ending and I’m not a fan of those endings at all.

Book Description: In the second Boystown collection, Chicago private investigator Nick Nowak finds himself involved with a young man who murdered his stepfather but refuses to assist in his own defense, hired to find the murderer of a dead porno star, and, in a case that traps him between the two men he loves, searching for a serial killer’s only living victim. Set in the second half of 1981, Boystown 2 follows Nick as he juggles his deepening relationship with Detective Bert Harker with the return of his ex, Daniel Laverty. Which man will he choose? Healing the Fox: Animal Attraction by Michelle Houston
Reviewed by Theresa

I love shifter stories so when I read the blurb for Healing the Fox, my interest was piqued, but the story just seemed to fall flat. It didn’t hold my attention as I would have liked; the story felt rushed. I didn’t feel an emotional connection between Scott and Christian and the relationship between Scott and Christian seemed forced.

It is a quick read, only nineteen pages. As a quickie, it is an okay story, but if you’re looking for depth, I’d have to say give this one a pass.

When an injured fox comes into the wildlife rehabilitation center, Scott knows he isn’t an ordinary animal, he’s a shifter. Taking him home, Scott does his best to care for the injured shifter, and finds himself falling in love.

Rust Belt by Jessica Freely
Reviewed by Theresa

I really enjoyed Rust Belt by Jessica Freely. The fighting might have turned me off a bit, but it wasn’t the focal point of the story so by no means a major issue.

David’s shyness was sweet and Seth’s determination to keep David safe was endearing—not that David was a pushover. He was just as determined to keep Seth safe as Seth was him. I was actually kept glued to my seat because throughout the story, I swear I could hear the theme song from Jaws playing in my head, letting me know that something bad was about to happen. The suspense was tangible, the characters well developed—David and Seth are both very interesting men and well liked by other characters in the book—easily attracting and keeping this reader’s attention.

Theresa

Teaser: Seth is scarred, body and soul. When he meets lonely, virginal David, their shatteringly erotic encounter makes anything seem possible, even love. But in a desperate town, the past is hard to escape.

Book Description: Times are tough in the Rust Belt, where once mighty industries now wither and die. As a city struggles for survival, two men find passion, comfort, and redemption in each other’s arms.

Seth is scarred, body and soul, by his experiences in the Pit, an illegal fighting ring where men are brutalized for the entertainment of the crowd. Though he managed to escape, Seth will never forget those he had to leave behind. When he meets David, he is instantly attracted to him but knows that the sexy, bookish blond is far beyond his reach. Then David is attacked on the street and in an eyeblink, Seth alters both of their lives forever.

For lonely, virginal David, Seth comes out of the night like a hero from one of his favorite books, only hotter. Seth’s passion and tenderness pierce the protective shell of isolation David has drawn around himself. In the wake of their shatteringly erotic encounter, David asks Seth to live with him. But just when it seems like happily ever after can happen even in Detroit, Seth’s past comes back to drag them back into the Pit.

Publisher’s Note: This is a sequel to a book released by another publisher, and contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: Anal play/intercourse, male/male sexual practices, strong violence.
