The Darkling Thrush by Josh Lanyon Reviewed by Kathy K.
The Darkling Thrush is available for purchase at Loose Id.
Josh Lanyon has an uncanny knack for making any story immediate and real. Even though this story is very much fantasy interwoven with the ‘real’ world, I had no problem making the adjustment to the world Colin inhabited. In many ways I was reminded of the world created by Karen Marie Moning in her Fever series, although not as dark. It’s the commonality of the Fae and other ‘mystic’ creatures with a large dose of magick.
The Darkling Thrush is entirely riveting… as is the norm for Josh Lanyon’s writing. He has a way of bringing so much life to his characters and to the situations in which they find themselves, even if they are of the more fantastic variety. And even though this is a departure from Mr. Lanyon’s other books that I’ve read, it’s still written with wit and detail; you may just have to stretch your mind to believe the unbelievable. But it’s a heck of a journey!
And I could ardently wish that this won’t be the last that we see of Colin and Septimus.

Book Teaser: All hell just might literally break loose when “Book Hunter” Colin Bliss ignores his lover’s warning and travels to the remote Western Isles to find a legendary book of spells.
Book Description: Fed up with his desk duty in the Imperial Arcane Library, book hunter Colin Bliss accepts a private commission to find The Sword’s Shadow, a legendary and dangerous witches’ grimoire. But to find the book, Colin must travel to the remote Western Isles and solve a centuries’ old murder.
It should be nothing more than an academic exercise, so why is dour — and unreasonably sexy — Magister Septimus Marx doing his best to keep Colin from accepting this mission — even going so far as to seduce Colin on the train journey north?
Septimus is not the only problem. Who is the strange faery woman that keeps appearing at inconvenient times? And who is working behind the scenes with the sinister adventuress Irania Briggs? And why do Colin’s employers at the Museum of the Literary Occult keep accusing Colin of betraying them?
As Colin digs deeper and deeper into the book’s mysterious past, he begins to understand why Septimus is willing to stop him at any price — but by then, it’s too late to turn back.

The Blue Moon Cafe by Rick R. Reed Reviewed by Theresa
Blue Moon Café by Rick R. Reed is available for purchase at Amber Allure.
Although I really liked the story line, I just couldn’t seem to get as involved in the story as I would have liked. I’ve read other Rick Reed stories that I have enjoyed quite a bit so you could say this one was a one-off. Thad and Sam didn’t endear themselves to me as lovers. I didn’t feel the emotion between them that should have been there. The suspense, now that is a different story. I figured out who was who pretty easily but I was kept wondering what was going to happen next and that I liked. Some of the scenes are not for the faint of heart; he is quite descriptive in the attacks.
I wasn’t happy with the ending and I’m really hoping that there is a follow-up to this story. No matter the direction it headed, I would like to see what happens next.

Boystown by Marshall Thornton Reviewed by Theresa
Boystown by Marshall Thronton is available for purchase at Torquere Books.
Before Boystown, I had never read anything by Marshall Thornton so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect and after starting the first of the three stories in Boystown, I think had prepared myself to hate it. The stories of Nick Nowak Private Eye are based in the early eighties, BA (before Aids). I’m not a prude but promiscuous sex doesn’t do it for me and sex without condoms… well, I’m not going there. But, as I was reminded by someone, the author was only being true to the times. I’m one of those people who seldom scraps a book—my innate curiosity usually keeps reading until the end— and in this case, the more I read, the more I found I was actually starting to like the stories. Nick has a hard time turning down a pretty face and a hard cock. Oddly enough, I think that became part of his charm and I just kept reminding myself that it was 1981.
I am looking forward to the next Boystown. I want to know where Nick Nowak’s life leads him. I wasn’t left with a cliffhanger, which I do appreciate, but there was just enough of a tease that I am curious to find out if maybe the next Nick Nowak stories will show him in a slightly different light. Either way, I will be reading Boystown 2, which as I understand, barring any complications, will release on my birthday July 28th
I apologize that I didn’t review this book as three different stories but I found I had a hard time separating them in my mind. Each story may have had its own drama, but the ending of each just led right into the next so it really was hard to view them as different stories.

When he isn’t detecting, and sometimes when he is, Nick moves through a series of casual relationships. But his long suppressed romantic side surfaces when he meets Detective Bert Harker. Will he give love another chance? Or, will he continue to bury himself in the arms of strangers?

Do Me Right by Lisa G. Riley Reviewed by Kathy K.
Do Me Right by Lisa G. Riley is available for purchase at Loose Id.
First off I have to say that this story and I were not a good fit. My expectations, based on the blurb, were quite different from the story that was told; I expected much more suspense than was delivered.
And personally, I found it very difficult to connect with the characters; for me, if I cannot get into the characters, the story, regardless how well it’s written, just isn’t going to work for me.
There was nothing wrong with the mechanics of the story, it was solely a personality conflict.
I found Kendra to be rather immature in her neuroses and the different elements weren’t enough to pull me deeper into the story. I hate when that happens.

Book Teaser: Hot sex plus love should equal marriage, right? But for Sloan and Kendra, his job and her neuroses, it equals flying bullets, a meddling mother-in-law, a libidinous brother, and a missed wedding. What’s it going to take for them to do it right?
Book Description: Kendra Masters and Sloan Johnson have been together for four years and are planning their wedding. Ad exec Kendra has issues of trust because of her father’s abandonment, so she is forever—subconsciously—waiting for Sloan to leave her. Though he loves her, Sloan is tired of dealing with his nutty, but lovable, fianceé’s pre- and misconceived notions. So what if the sex is plentiful… and inventive… and hot…?
They’re both unsure if marriage is practical. Because in addition to wedding planning around Kendra’s neurosis, the couple has to deal with his libertine of a brother, her saboteur of a mother, and the fact that a very dangerous…someone…is stealing from Sloan’s client’s trust fund.

More By Sloan Parker Reviewed by Theresa

More by Sloan Parker is now available for purchase at Loose Id.
Edge-of-your-seat suspense, non-stop sex and one of the best romances I have read this year.
I had my doubts about this story at first because it was done in first person, but Sloan Parker really pulled it off. I was in love with Luke, Matt and Richard from the first night at the club. The only real complaint about the story being in first person was that I really wanted inside Matt’s and Richard’s heads. Hearing things from their point of view would have increased my enjoyment of the story, but it does not stop this book from going onto my favorites list. It is definitely going to be one I remember.
I swear I could hear the music of impending doom in my head, waiting for Luke’s dad to make his next move. I was absolutely incensed at the lengths his dad would go to control him. The fact that Luke finally started to allow himself to live his life with his two lovers out in the open was a giant step for Luke, one that both of them seemed to recognize and no matter how scared Luke got, both Richard and Matt were always there for him. Has Luke finally found someone, or in this case, two someone’s, important enough to stand up and put a stop to his father’s harassment?

Teaser: A confirmed loner spends one explosive night in a sex club with two men who make him want to break all of his self-protective rules, especially the no-repeat clause. But his father, a senator, is determined to destroy Luke’s something more.
Book Description: For fifteen years Luke Moore has lived by three rules: stay off his father’s radar, never spend more than a single night with any man, and never fall in love again. But one night of explosive sex and two men whom he can’t get out of his head have Luke breaking them all. Richard and Matthew push him past all his boundaries—both sexually and personally—and now he’s no longer hiding from his senator father; he’s taking him on. And he isn’t just falling for one man; he’s falling for two. If you’re going to break the rules, might as well break them big.
But Luke’s father has his reasons for hating how his son lives, and he’ll do whatever he can and use all his power to keep Luke away from Richard and Matthew.
Can this threesome find a way to make their unconventional relationship last with the world around them trying to pull them apart? And will Luke be able to keep breaking his rules for Richard and Matthew, or will he head back to his familiar way of life just when his new lovers want to bind him tighter?

Life Without Raine by Riley Ashford
Reviewed by Kathy K.

Life Without Raine is available for purchase at Phaze.
Lost love stories are among my favourite themes: add to that everlasting love and eternal lovers searching for an opportunity to finally spend their lives together instead of searching and you’ve got an I’ve-gotta-read-this book. Then we’re based in Scotland… alas no kilts, but a hunky Scotsman is always sexy.
I liked, and felt bad, that Michael remembered all his past lives and the missed chances. But it definitely added to the tension… I knew how everything had happened over the centuries and that it was far from over.
Raine I liked as well; she wasn’t prepared for what was to come. Then she started experiencing things, having memories that she couldn’t figure out. I really liked how Riley Ashford worked the dynamics; between Raine and Michael and with Raine and what was happening to her. Life Without Raine is tense and thrilling, sad and heartbreaking and always a very enjoyable read.

Book Description: Raine Sinclair can’t believe she’s inherited a castle. She’s an
American, after all, and has no need for an ancient pile of crumbling stone. After
six months of communication with the English barrister handling the estate, she

Michael Connors is NOT what she pictured as a barrister. Too handsome and sexy for
her peace of mind, he could melt her underwear with just one look. Too bad the poor insane man thinks they were married in a previous life.
To receive the property and promised wealth Raine must face unexpected danger, a crazy housekeeper, a jealous rival, and above all, a man who believes he’s loved her for more than eight hundred years…and says he can’t bear to live another life without Raine.

Riding The Wolf by Jessica Quinn and Mary Winter Reviewed by Kathy K.
The relationships between Daniel and Red, Red and Jack and Jack and Daniel provided a range of reactions and interactions. In some ways I would have liked to see more between Daniel and Jack but, of the three, Red is the main focus. She’s a strong woman who is attracted to strong men and she is determined to succeed in a field where few women can be found.
There were a couple of instances where, later on in the story, something happened that contradicted previous statements. That did grate a bit, but they weren’t story breakers for me; just something that didn’t really jive.
Overall I liked what Jessica Quinn and Mary Winter did with story. The three main characters and the premise were all good. At times, however, it felt as though the authors were trying to do too much in one novel. But this in no way means that I’m not interested in anything further from this writing duo.
Book Teaser: When Red’s threatened by a killer, her lover Daniel can’t fight his attraction to the werewolf police officer assigned to protect her. Jack’s dying for a taste of Red. If they can’t work it out, the tension’s going to leave her vulnerable to the Axeman.

I really like both Peter and Nick, although I wanted to knock Peter on the head for keeping secrets. But the interactions between the two men were excellent and I could just feel the tension as well as the love they have for each other. I also really enjoyed the mystery; Ms. Kimberling did a good job setting up a number of possible suspects. I was quite impressed with her descriptions of the area and winter weather. In fact, I had to go search out a sweater.

The Dark Tide by Josh Lanyon Reviewed by Kathy K.
Josh Lanyon and his Adrien English Mysteries are among my favourites in the genre. Not only is there a fascinating and, often, thrilling mystery but there is also a touch of romance for bookstore owner Adrien English. In this, Mr. Lanyon’s 5th book in the series, The Dark Tide, the tension is revved up a couple of notches as is the romance. Will he or won’t he?
I know the answer my heart wanted, but I was never really sure until the end. I also sincerely and strongly hope that we will be treated to another Adrien English adventure soon.
The mystery? Is classic in the best tradition of such authors as Agatha Christie, Victor J. Banis and, of course, Josh Lanyon. I had no idea who the murderer was… but then I’m always content to follow the sleuth along; let him figure it out.
And once again, the secondary characters are vivid and real… the interactions between Adrien and his assistant / stepsister Natalie play out in vivid colour and action; I’m nearly always choking back a laugh or two. I love the relationships that Adrien has with his extended family. And Jake Riordan is back; talk about a relationship that has had more than its share of ups-and-downs. But Josh Lanyon brings vulnerability to both Adrien and Jake, and with Jake now being true to who he is; suffice it to say that this could go in any direction.
If you’ve never one of Josh Lanyon’s Adrien English Mysteries, don’t hold back any longer. The stories and characters that play out in Mr. Lanyon’s books are always unique, fascinating and sure to become favourites. And while the Adrien English books might be able to stand alone, it’s much, much better if you follow along through the series. There are strong connections between the stories and the enjoyment will be vastly multiplied.
But most of all you’re missing one heck of an excellent story!
Book Teaser: When a half-century old skeleton tumbles out of the wall at Cloak and Dagger Bookstore, Adrien English hires hot and handsome ex-lover PI Jake Riordan to get to the bottom of things. Jake’s only too willing, but it may prove hazardous to his heart.
Book Description: As if recovering from heart surgery beneath the gaze of his over-protective family wasn’t exasperating enough, someone keeps trying to break into Adrien English’s bookstore. What is this determined midnight intruder searching for?
When a half-century old skeleton tumbles out of the wall in the midst of the renovation of Cloak and Dagger Bookstore renovation, Adrien turns to hot and handsome ex-lover Jake Riordan — now out-of-the closet and working as a private detective.
Jake is only too happy to have reason to stay in close contact with Adrien, but there are more surprises in Adrien’s past than either one of them expects — and one of them may prove hazardous to Jake’s own heart.

Book review: I was so happy to see that Taylor and Will were back for another adventure. Josh Lanyon is one of my favorite authors; his storytelling, his characters and the situations in which they find themselves are all gripping, intriguing and downright suspenseful. Putting down any of his books is very difficult and in Old Poison, Mr. Lanyon has done it again. I sped through this second installment in his Dangerous Grounds series and, in many ways, I found it even more tension-filled than the first book. I also breathed a sigh of relief as Will and Taylor seem to be making a real go of their relationship. The two of them are both incredibly attractive, even just taking into account their personalities. They are also very complementary men; Will’s ability to think before acting often keeps It’s only been a month or so since their adventures in Dangerous Grounds took place, and now they’re facing an entirely new danger. The tension is finely honed and carries us along as both Will and Taylor are facing personal challenges as well as relationship issues. One of the things that I like most about Josh Lanyon’s storytelling is that his characters are not supermen; they’re real people who fight, get hurt and suffer. They’re also people that we can admire and get involved with. If you haven’t read either of Josh Lanyon’s Dangerous Ground books, what are you waiting for? This is not the first Josh Lanyon story that I’ve ever read and it will certainly not be the last. I hadn’t read the previous story ~ I Spy Something Bloody ~ but it was in my TBR. Figuring that reading the first book before delving into the second sounded like a good idea, I did just that.
I would have liked I Spy Something Wicked regardless, but it makes much, much more sense if read after the Josh Lanyon Mark and Stephen story.

Tuesday June 30, 2009 Carol Lynne new book Ghosts of Alcatraz debuts at Loose Id!
This book is a little different from the normal Carol Lynne novels we’re used too. It is a horror/ghost futuristic romance I am really looking forward to reading this

Carol Lynne’s Ghosts of Alcatraz
Genre: LGBT Futuristic Paranormal Length:
When prison inmates begin dying in shocking and sometimes gruesome ways, warden Jensen Black decides to bring in sexy parapsychologist Brian Phipps to investigate. Getting to the bottom of what’s killing the men for whom he’s responsible is the plan. Falling for the lamb of a man with the heart of lion isn’t on the agenda, but his heart has a mind of its own.
The attraction between the two men is instantaneous, but before they can fully explore the depths of their passion the ghosts set their sights on Brian. And as their relationship heats up, the danger escalates, leaving both men to wonder if they’ll ever make it off Alcatraz alive. Let alone, together.
Publisher’s Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: Anal play/intercourse, male/male sexual practices, violence.
Chasing Smoke by K.A. Mitchell Reader Reviewed by Theresa
Chasing Smoke by K.A. Mitchell while not my favorite of hers it is still an extremely good read. Emotional, sensual and hot, this is definitely a book you should read I have yet to read anything by K.A. Mitchell I haven’t liked and Chasing Smoke is no different.
In the best of times, Daniel Gardner hates visiting his family. With his boyfriend pressuring him for a mortgage-serious commitment, Christmas in Easton, PA sounds, for once, like a welcome escape. His old house holds more than memories of a miserable adolescence, though. It has Trey Eriksson.
Now new clues to the murder are resurfacing—and so is Trey and Daniel’s sexual chemistry. Except this time, Trey has come to terms with his orientation.
But their connection may not be enough to overcome the mistakes of the past. Not while a murderer still walks free…
Anyone who would rather not read about hooking back up with someone who broke your heart, minor suspense, hot guys who can handle guns and each other, and lots of steamy gay sex probably isn’t reading this warning anyway, but if you are, back away slowly and keep your hands where I can see them.
