The Severing by D.J. Manly
Reviewed by Droogie

The Severing by D.J. Manly was one of the strangest, and intriguing books that I have ever read.  Mr. Manly has done a wonderful job in taking us on a journey into the unknown.  I was fascinated from beginning to end.

Mr. manly is an excellent writer and what an imagination.  I wish I was half the writer he is.  This story was completely different to anything I have ever read before.  And his characterisation was brilliant.  Everyone was so realistic and multi-dimensional.

This tale was written in such a way that it was easy to follow, and had you guessing right to the end as to who the bad guy was.  The tale of Billy Conway afterlife was so well written; I loved how he interacted with both the dead and the still living.

Mr. Manly is definitely someone that I will be looking into for further adventures into his writing.  If I had to pick one thing to fault about this book… it would be that it ended… I wanted to keep reading; I wanted to hear more about Terrance and his ghostly companions. I wanted to know if the others found justice.  So my plea to Mr manly is please write further stories of those caught within the severing.

The world that Mr. Manly created was realistic and I liked the fact that within this world the characters grew as the storyline progressed.  The more you read about them the more you cared what happened to them.

Mr. manly had me reaching for the tissues in parts of this beautifully written tale of the dead.  It now has me wondering if this is what the afterlife is going to be like; so well done Mr. Manly.  I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this book as a good read.

The beautiful cover was done by: Reese Dante

I will finish with my favourite lines

Okay, this is like, ah… private. I’ll just sit on the sofa until… until what? Until he comes out, and then what?  Am I planning on following the guy everywhere he goes?  Well, why not?  It passes the time.  And the guy does have my life… well… he has my job.

Serere (Prelude to THE GARDEN) by Andy Frankham-Allen
Reviewed by Eve

Serere is all about the mystery. Mr. Frankham-Allen shows a deft hand at pacing and doling out clues. We’re given snapshots into the lives of paranormal beings and even though far more remains untold than is revealed, my suspension of disbelief never faltered.

I was hooked from the first sentence and stayed that way throughout the story.

The book is exactly what the title says. It’s a prelude to another story so if you need a neatly wrapped-up read, wait until you’ve got all the books in the series.

The conversations are intriguing and I loved the interesting phrases the author used. I also loved Mr. Frankham-Allen’s voice and look forward to reading more of his work.

Angel and the Assassin by Fyn Alexander
Reviewed by Kathy K.

The first book that I read by Fyn Alexander, Precious Jade, was amazing, and I found myself lost in the world of BDSM, a world that I knew very little about and, really, had less interest in. It was testament to her writing as well as the ability to evoke strong emotions related to her characters that I found so compelling. So when the opportunity arose to review Angel and the Assassin, it was a no-brainer; imagine my delight—actually the thrill—when I started reading it and I found myself utterly and totally enthralled.

Angel and Kael’s story is far more edgy, detailed, and delves even deeper into the world of BDSM, and yet I could not put the book down… at all. There are some fairly extreme aspects, elements that are not run of the mill and so in this respect I will give a gentle warning. For some people it could well cause some squeamishness, but to be honest, I was still fully engaged. Between Angel and Kael it all works; it’s who they are individually as well as together. It’s not a facet that had me dwelling on what it is; Ms. Alexander makes it a beautiful expression of their feelings and their needs. And I was wholly caught up in the tale.

I think a big part of the attraction—actually attraction is much too tame to describe the extreme sizzle between Kael and Angel—is how meeting Angel completely changed Kael’s life, in just about every way possible. Having a ring-side seat to these developments was fascinating. There is something about being privy to what’s going on in Kael’s mind and heart; can you say intense?
And lest you think that this is all that there is to the story, let me tell you that the suspense relating to Kael’s career choice is also quite intense. All in all, Ms. Alexander did a masterful job of combining all the, rather diverse, elements into one cohesive and thrilling whole.

If you are a fan of the BDSM genre, I highly recommend Fyn Alexander’s Angel and the Assassin.  Truly, I cannot fathom that a fan of the genre would not be as captivated as I was. And I will go even further: for those who have ever wondered about the lifestyle—at least fictionally—then in the context of a sexier than hell romance I think that this will appeal to a wide section of readers; I really do.

Breathe by Sloan Parker
Reviewed by Theresa

I became quite the fan of Sloan Parker with the release of her first novel, More, which had me totally captivated, so reading Breathe was a must. I can tell you that Ms. Parker has grabbed my attention yet again. Breathe is a bittersweet novel that had me in tears. I will admit the story started out a bit slow for me—the first chapter or two didn’t draw me in as quickly as I might have liked—but it was well worth it to keep turning the pages. I was soon sitting on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next. I haven’t read too many books that kept me guessing until the very end but Ms. Parker did just that. Breathe is full of mystery, suspense and hot sex. And fair warning, Breathe is full-box-of-Kleenex type of story.

The Geography Of Murder by P.A. Brown
Reviewed by Eve

P. A. Brown has penned a riveting whodunit in The Geography Of Murder. The characters are solid, complex and intriguing. Written in first-person, balancing back and forth between the two primary protagonists, this book quickly had me simply reading it for the pleasure of finding out what happened next, and forgetting I was reviewing it.

The author doles out oodles of rich detail that never bog the story down. I especially loved the descriptions of the marine settings, and the inside view of a homicide detective’s world.

Ms. Brown’s voice is terrific and the pace of the story never faltered. She definitely has a winner with The Geography Of Murder.

Make Me, Sir by Cherise Sinclair
Reviewed by Sasha

Make Me, Sir is the fifth installment of Cherise Sinclair’s, Shadowlands series and the first book of Mrs. Sinclair’s that I have read and let me tell you I would have not noticed if it did belong to a series, this book is deliciously written and can stand on it’s own two feet. I enjoyed the way the relationship develops between Gabrielle and Marcus it wasn’t rushed even though the time within the story line is short. Make me, Sir is an easy read that flows smoothly. Marcus and Gabrielle characters were meant for one another they both are spunky, strong minded, loving caring people who would do anything to help the people they love the most.

I liked the story as a whole it was witty, suspenseful, mysterious, loving, kept me on the edge and the sex was hot and steamy. I Can’t wait for the next book in Sinclair’s Shadowlands because I am very curious to find out who is this mysterious man behind the scene snatching up all these women. Will Gabrielle and Marcus be a part of ruining this sicko.

Book Description: Her job is to make his life miserable. His job is to make her submit. Whose heart will surrender first?

Across the country, rebellious BDSM submissives are being systematically kidnapped, one from each club. When her friend falls prey to the slavers, FBI victim specialist Gabrielle volunteers to be bait in a club not yet hit: the Shadowlands.

She finds that being a bratty sub comes naturally, especially when she gets to twit the appallingly conservative Master of the trainees. But she soon discovers he’s not as stuffy as she’d thought. Or as mean. She’d expected punishment, even humiliation, but she sure never expected to fall in love with a damned lawyer.

Courtesy of a prima donna ex-wife, Marcus loathes disobedient submissives. When the club owner insists he admit an incredibly bratty trainee, he’s furious. But as he comes to know Gabrielle and sees the alluring sweetness beneath the sass, he starts to fall for her.

Unfortunately, Marcus isn’t the only one who believes the feisty redhead is a prize worth capturing. And in the world of the slaver, such treasure is worth a hefty fee.

Desert Run by Marshall Thornton
Reviewed by Kathy K.

I’ve been long awaiting an opportunity to read one of Marshall Thornton’s books and when Desert Run became available I snapped it up. I am very happy I did so because the book was much, much more than I hoped. What a rush!

There’s an edge to Desert Run that I hadn’t really expected, which is rather odd when you think about it—there are mobsters out for vengeance for cryin’ out loud! Maybe it’s that it didn’t come from the direction I had thought it would. What this says to me is that Mr Thornton has a rather serpentine mind. But whatever it is, suffice it to say that I was totally enthralled throughout the book. And while I was glad that book was only 189 pages—so I could read it quicker—I was also sad when I came to the end. Well, not sad, just feeling as though I’d had to leave a good friend sooner than I would have wanted to.

The characters, especially Don and Harlan, were awesome. Don was rather an enigma, understandably so, especially in light of later events. From the very beginning I couldn’t get a reading on him, on who he was, what he wanted. And even though we were told a bit about him in the blurb, I just couldn’t find that in him.  I like mysteries and Don is very much that. The way that Mr. Thornton draws his personality out as the story progresses is very nicely done. And it makes perfect sense; Don’s been hiding who he is for a long time.

Harlan is adorable! Well, he’s more than that ‘cause he is a man grown, but there’s an innocence vying with cynicism in this young man… and that’s enough to tick me off. Not that it’s there, but that Harlan has had to develop it. I think that the contradiction in Harlan what Don responds to, probably because he lost a lot of his innocence too at a young age, but for different reasons. Even so, I think it’s this initial connection that Don feels that is the key to him opening up to the attraction that he has for Harlan.

Desert Run is a fantastic story and one that I will enjoy again.  I’ve also made a note to move up the reading queue Marshall Thornton’s Nick Nowak mysteries that are in my TBR.  After finally discovering the wonderful storytelling of the author, I’m now thinking two things: Why did it take me so long!?! And I hope that he has a very long backlist!

Dead of Night by Victor J. Banis
Reviewed by Kathy K.

One VERY strong word of warning: do not, under any circumstances, start this book anytime after 10 am in the morning. Seriously! Unless of course you love being so freakin’ scared to death that sleep remains a distant dream.

Wow!

Victor Banis is another author on my favourites list and it’s extremely well-deserved. And even with this, probably one of the most terrifying—okay, yes I am a wuss—books I’ve read, I still maintain that is true. This is because even as I would be cringing and trying to be as invisible as possible, I could not stop reading. I was as trapped as was poor Calvin…and oh how my heart breaks for him.

Tragic? You have no idea. There is something, some entity, some force, that pervades the story. The sense that whatever it is exists is not in any doubt and my reassurances to myself that this is *only a story* just couldn’t totally negate the impression of looming danger.

One of the things about Dead of Night that I found so incredibly riveting is Calvin. We get an up-close and personal look at his character, and his thoughts are open to us. Banis brings to the reader every little tidbit of what is going on inside Calvin’s mind and yet there are always so many questions underlying everything we learn that it’s almost impossible to really know just what is going on around this poor young man.

I am not in any way, shape or form going to give anything away because honestly that would be cheating you, the reader, of the superb building of tension. The realisation that there is definitely something evil that permeates not only Calvin’s house, but his very life is something you need to experience yourself.  And I think that if I, chicken-little to the core, was engrossed, terrified and tantalized, then you should be too. And you will be scared, oh yes you will. But you will also not forget Victor Banis’ thrilling Dead of the Night.

Book Description: “Doctor,” he said before he said anything else, “I am haunted. By ghosts.”

His parents are brutally murdered in a Manson-like intrusion and Calvin narrowly escapes the same fate. He spends time in an expensive private mental hospital, but when he returns home, he senses the presence of evil in the shadowy old mansion.  Someone seems to follow him along the halls, and whispers just beyond his hearing. Gradually the terror escalates. A hand shakes him awake at night, just as it did on that fatal night. Cringing in his bed, he hears his father being murdered all over again, and then his mother. But is the mansion haunted-or is it Calvin?

A Man of Principle by Victor J. Banis
Reviewed by Kathy K.

Once again Victor Banis manages, in a very few pages, to create characters that left me with a strong sense of being there, although thankfully only as an eavesdropper. Even so I got a really good picture of Neal; his mannerisms, his off-handedness. Not so much Neal’s host, but that’s only to be expected. It is, after all, a first person POV and our host was also the storyteller as well as the audience.

It’s actually a very interesting dynamic that there are two stories in one. Of course Neal’s does tend to rather overshadow his hosts.

A little spookiness along with the tale of mystery and murder and I’m still questioning exactly what *did* happen? Was it as Neal described? Or was there something else, a darker undertone that crept through the pages.

Whatever it is, or was, it’s very nicely constructed and delivered and Victor Banis remains, in my estimation, an author who can do no wrong. Fascinating and varied are his stories and A Man of Principle is definitely illustrative of that.

And with those words, Neal introduces an eerie tale of betrayal that leads to murder…

Friday Night Jamie by Bren Christopher
Reviewed by Theresa

Bren Christopher has written a romantic suspense that kept me so involved I didn’t put the book down until I hit the last word and then I still didn’t want to put it down. Not because the author left me hanging, but because I had become so attached to the characters I just wasn’t ready to let them go. I fell in love with both Jamie and Matt. Jamie has this image of how he wants his life and who he wants in it so it isn’t easy to let that image go. Matt is a man who knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to go after Jamie and then protect him, even if he has to protect Jamie from himself.

Friday Night Jamie was my introduction to author Bren Christopher and I sincerely hope this title won’t be my last.

Book Description: Jamie is an accountant who lives by a strict schedule: every day is planned; the future is predictable. And that schedule includes one night a week when he allows himself to blow off steam at a gay dance club in the City. One Friday night he gets more than he bargained for when he meets Matt, an out of work stranger with long dark hair and rough hands. The attraction is undeniable but Matt does not fit Jamie’s idea of the perfect man to share his carefully ordered life.

Instead, Jamie longs for a date with his dream man: handsome, sophisticated Keith, a successful Vice President at his prestigious New York accounting firm, a man on his way up.

But everything changes when Jamie discovers a suspicious error in one of his accounts. Suddenly, he finds himself on the run from both the mob and the FBI — and the only man who can help him is the tall, dark-haired stranger he rejected. Because Matt is not who he seems — and neither is Keith.

Home by William Neale
Reviewed by Theresa

William Neal is definitely an author to be on the lookout for. Home, his first novel, is a must read. Home is a hot mix of mystery and romance. Thoroughly enjoyable.

I have always loved a story where the characters had crushes on each other in high school and find each other later on in life. I am a hopeless romantic, what can I say? And William Neal delivers on everything I want in a romance with Home. Mr. Neale gave me a romance that I could believe in, although there was an immediate attraction between Rogan and Lucas they didn’t jump into bed together right away there was a slow steady progression to that point that was comfortable and romantic, while jumping into bed isn’t a bad thing and some stories call for it Home didn’t, I really enjoy the progression of getting to know who each other – don’t get me wrong the sex is hot and plenty just not the focus of the story. While everything isn’t all romance and roses for Lucas and Rogan—they both have issues in their lives they have to work out plus a crazy stalker— William Neal delivers a truly believable romantic suspense that I think everyone should read.

While the Savage Sleeps by Andrew E. Kaufman
Reviewed by Eve

Andrew E. Kaufman’s While The Savage Sleeps is a first-rate forensic whodunit, cleverly masquerading as a supernatural thriller. Those two aspects meshed well and kept me riveted. My only caution would be that Mr. Kaufman doesn’t scrimp on the well-researched and grisly details. Murder scenes are outlined in full, gruesome detail so be prepared to park your squeamishness at the curb. While the Savage Sleeps won’t disappoint if you do.

The story moves very quickly and I wished I read faster so I could gobble up the details. There were a few editing issues that pulled me out of the story from time to time but once I got used to the cadence of the book, it was easier to go with the flow.

Mr. Kaufman definitely kept me glued to the screen from start to finish. What I particularly loved was While The Savage Sleeps doles out clues with the tight fistedness of a cheap relative. I was well into the first chapters before I even figured out who the principal character was. The suspense, and twists-and-turns are terrific. Well done, Mr. Kaufman!

Lancelot’s Lady by Cherish D’Angelo
Reviewed by Kathy K.

I enjoyed my first experience with a Cherish D’Angelo novel. I had a bit of trouble at the beginning where both Rhianna and Jonathan were rather antagonistic toward each other, and I felt that Rhianna’s initial assumptions about Jonathan somewhat… dated perhaps? Rather reminiscent of romance stories from twenty years or more ago.

But for all that there’s something about this book—about the characters of Rhianna and Jonathan—that just clicked.

I think that part of it is that they’re not the perfect hero and heroine; they’re sometimes challenging to fall in love with, but they are people who take on more definition as the story goes on. Their interactions with those around them can be somewhat simplistic, and that’s perhaps where I get the impression of datedness. There’s nothing about Lancelot’s Lady that’s particularly earth-shattering, but that would, for this story, be a mistake.

I do like the progression of the knowledge that’s gradually exposed and even better I really enjoy the growth that both Jonathan and Rhianna undergo.

Then there is JT and his butler Higginson; they are rather sweet even though I think that’s the last adjective that anyone would use to describe JT.  But knowing that your life is coming to an end that you know is close can change a person. What I really loved the most between the two men is that they’ve got a long-lived friendship that’s seen them through many diverse situations and even still they value each other.  I was rather surprised to find that these two somewhat background characters had the biggest effect on me.  And it was a nice surprise.

The various mysteries—some more mysterious than others to be sure—were well suited to Lancelot’s Lady; nothing extreme but there is one that truly came out of nowhere… wow!

This isn’t a story where I was completely emotionally involved with the characters, but at the same time I found it rather refreshing. There’s only so much dark emotion and angst that I can take and I always turn to something easier with which to just sit back and enjoy.

I would definitely recommend Cherish D’Angelo’s Lancelot’s Lady, especially to anyone who enjoys a fairly uncomplicated story with a rather genteel approach to romance. It’s a touch of the past in a modern tale and I rather liked it.

Killer Designs by Sherre Pratt
Reviewed by Meav

I enjoy romantic thrillers, especially when a psycho serial killer is involved and Killer Designs did not disappoint me!  The killer was totally psychotic and the two main characters, Sunny and Jake (Caution: hot cop alert!) had some serious chemistry going on!  The action starts from the very beginning of the book, which I appreciated because my attention was snagged immediately.  Even though the killer’s identity was known early on, I was not bored; I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what he was going to do next!

The chemistry between Sunny and Jake was taut with sexual tension.  There were moments of “will they, won’t they?” which culminated in a steamy love scene.  However, the timing of the love scene threw me for a loop and resulted in my becoming disconnected with the story for a moment.  Sunny tells Jake she thinks the killer has her brother, the proof is at her office ,and they end up having sex right at that moment…all night.  Umm…if I were Sunny the fact that my brother is being held hostage would be a real mood killer.  And as for Jake, as a cop, I would think he would have to leave and get the evidence, pronto.  The second love scene’s timing was along the same lines, so I was not able to get into these scenes as much as I would have liked.  Also, I felt the author dragged out the kidnapping too long.  The author may have been trying to draw out the suspense, but for me, it seemed like the cops were just running around in circles when it was obvious to me early on who the killer was and where he was holding Sunny’s brother hostage.

However, these musings aside, Killer Designs is a good book to read if you are looking for a sensual and suspenseful escape!

Bite This! A Richard Dick Mystery By Wade J. McMahan
Reviewed by Eve

Bite This! is a cute, tongue-in-cheek read. For me, it was a fast paced and a nice diversion. I enjoyed Mr. McMahan’s sense of humor and once I got into the flow of his writing, the story made perfect sense despite its roots in the land of make-believe. This is the first of his Richard Dick mysteries and reads well as a stand-alone.

Eve

Book Description: Detective Richard Dick is hired to look into mysterious disappearances in the town of Wareville. His client is enormous, the suspects are bizarre and the situation is turning critical. This isn’t Dick’s typical case but, then again, this laugh-out-loud story isn’t your typical mystery either!

Fair Game by Josh Lanyon
Reviewed by Kathy K.

Fair Game by Josh Lanyon is among the first books released by the new Carina Press and I just want to congratulate them for their exceptionally good taste!

As a fan of M/M romance stories, those by Josh Lanyon rate right up there along with those by my other favourite writers in the genre. His storytelling is captivating and his characters always capable of drawing the reader right into wanting to know their story. He accomplishes this with his descriptive and evocative prose. His words don’t only set a scene, but they let us know exactly what, who, where, when, how and why… but only as much as we need at the time.

In Fair Game there is an exquisite build up of tension; it comes upon the reader quietly and almost gently and before I knew it I was on the edge of my seat.  And it’s not only the mystery of the missing student but the whole story of what happened between Elliot and Tucker.  And I will state now that that didn’t go at all as I had thought it would.

We are at the mercy of the author as each emotional wall between Tucker and Elliot is breached; there were some quite startling interactions between the two as the story progressed. Once again Josh Lanyon took me completely by surprise… something at which he excels.  Oh and Fair Game is a very sexy romance as well as a mystery… I really can’t forget to mention the romance! Not only hot—even without a lot of explicit sex—Fair Game is sexy and an equally satisfying romantic tale.

Another element that I found in Fair Game was an eeriness that would appear from time to time; I would get the feeling of an evil lurking. *shudder* I really didn’t expect that, but it works very well to increase the tension.

As a mystery, Fair Game is well-done. There is a whole whack of suspects, some more probable than others, but I really didn’t think that any one could be totally cleared. Mr. Lanyon’s characterizations were wonderful and I felt as though I got to know each of them as well as anyone person can when looking through their own eyes.

There was also an intricate building of connections that added to the mystery.  The story is not told in first person, but we are privy only to Elliot’s thoughts and memories. The rest is for us to discern while we see things from Elliot’s perspective.

Surprisingly I found that I did pretty well… or maybe it was just Josh Lanyon’s mastery of the mystery… yeah, probably the latter. *sigh*

I like Elliot; the man’s gone through enough in the last year-and-a-half to cause some fairly serious issues and he’s definitely got them.  I really felt for the sense of loss that he felt—the loss of his health, his career and related self-identity, his relationship with Tucker and even hope. And, at the beginning anyway, I found myself totally angry with Tucker for abandoning Elliot as he had.

But a funny thing happened as the story went on; while we do see things from Elliot’s POV we’re also exposed to what he sees and I think that sometimes I picked up on things faster than he did.  But then he was directly affected while I could see things as an outsider could, with a degree of dispassion that increased emotional clarity.

Tucker ended up being someone that I very easily fell for; it became more and more obvious just why the two of them had been together in the first place.

There is one quote that really claimed my attention. Elliot, even though it would be better for him, refuses to use aids when walking. It’s partly humorous but also testament to men’s need to always be strong and on top:

“If that was a display of fragile male ego, let the show begin.”

Ultimately it meshed with another—okay, yes it is only general—observation that occurred regarding the male of the species. While men are far too often told that they’re not to show feelings, whatever they may be, it doesn’t mean that they DON’T feel. It just means that they’re trained to ignore anything that could be construed as emotion. They’re definitely not meant to show it: it’s not right nor is it safe to do so.  What an indictment on society’s gender-based expectations.  It may be seemingly off-topic but it is a big reason behind Elliot’s problems.

And once again, what began as a mere review of Josh Lanyon’s Fair Game ended up being a rather lengthy and, while I hope not but fear it may be so, convoluted look at my impressions of this book.

For fans of Josh Lanyon, Fair Game is one more winning book in a rather exceptional line-up. For those new to either Mr. Lanyon’s work or the M/M romance genre, then Fair Game is an excellent starting point.  Go forth and conquer!

Pack of Lies by Vanessa Vaughn
Reviewed by Theresa

From the start of this book, something was off to me. I must have been about half way through the story before it dawned on me that there was little action and hardly any dialogue going on. It was all thoughts, feelings and perceptions of the person who’s head we’re in at the time . The story is told from the points of view of Marcus and Jack, clearly marked at the beginning of each chapter who’s POV we’re getting at the time. The author did a good job of this, I never found myself lost but as for the rest of the story…

Marcus and Jack’s relationship, if you can call it that, didn’t ring true for me. It felt contrived, and it was if I was just supposed to buy that that was the way it was supposed to be. I didn’t. The dynamics of the Pack weren’t believable to me either. If you aren’t strong enough to lead the pack, then you’re killed and the fact that Marcus had survived so long as a leader was a surprise to me.

In the end when the fight between Julian (Marcus’ rival) and Jack gets to an interesting point, where it looks as if Jack might be defeated, Marcus jumps in and puts a stop to it. I just could not see that happening at all.  The bond Marcus and Jack were forming should have been a force that the Pack couldn’t deny and the author, although she touched on this bond several times, never showed it to the Pack.

All in all, Pack of Lies just seemed to missing something.

Book Description: When Jack is attacked by a powerful werewolf one moonlit night, his world is forever changed.

Marcus is that wolf, the strong leader of his pack, who never imagined a mere mortal could ever escape him, much less ever become one of his kind. And yet, as time passes, he can’t deny the handsome human is slowly beginning to change.

No longer the civilized architect he used to be, Jack feels a new power coalescing inside of him. He barely even recognizes himself as he becomes more sexual, more impulsive, more wild in every way.

But as the bite transforms him, it also binds he and his attacker together forever. The two share a powerful unbreakable link, no matter how forcefully they may each try to deny it.

Marcus is already hiding secrets from the other wolves, and his position as Alpha is threatened. Could Jack be the new ally Marcus needs to set things right, or will their desire for one another draw them away from all they know and alter the course of their lives forever?

Mahu Men by Neil Plakcy
Reviewed by Kathy K.

I’m a Neil Plakcy fan and have been since the first of his books that I read, that being Three Wrong Turns in the Desert. When I finally made my way to his Mahu stories I didn’t think that he could show me much that was new, but I was wrong, and happily so.

I really enjoy police stories, the painstaking attention to detail, the unraveling of the clues, the mystery. And with the beauty of Hawai’i as well as a cop who not only surfs but does excellent police work, Neil’s Mahu series became a big favorite right from the beginning.

In Mahu Men we are treated—and I do mean treated—to a number of stories about Kimo, both professional and personal. And in each one we learn a little more about him; the life changes he underwent after his dramatic and very public outing as well his notoriety as a gay cop.  I loved what we learn about Kimo in the four Mahu novels, but in this anthology we get what feels as a closer look… I’m sounding, and feeling, rather voyeuristic. But I can see myself going back to this book over and over again—in conjunction with the novels of course.

I enjoyed each one of the stories, but I certainly have a few favorites: ‘Blowing It’ is a rather lighthearted story, I definitely chuckled. Then there’s the sad ‘Online, Nobody Knows You’re a Dog’, definitely a study in human nature.  Then, in ‘The Second Detective’ a recurring character is right on the ball.

Each story shows a different side to Kimo, and we meet up, time and again, with quite a few regular characters and I really enjoy the continuity.

Mahu Men is a must-read for any Kimo Kanapa’aka fans; some may want to take their time and savor it, others will do as I did and devour the stories one right after the other.  But no matter which way you read Neil Plakcy’s Mahu Men, you’ll end up enjoying the stories within.

Kathy K.

Book Description:  Mixing mystery and erotica, the stories in Mahu Men take readers into the world of openly gay Honolulu homicide detective Kimo Kanapa’aka. Moving from pickups to murders, Kimo surfs the waves of his professional and personal lives in a sexy, sensual tropical paradise, where danger and desire lurk behind every palm tree. The stories fill the gaps between Neil Plakcy’s Mahu novels, showing Kimo dating as well as solving cases and establishing a relationship with his new detective partner. Mixing the sensuality of Plakcy’s erotica with the sharp-edged attitude of his mysteries, Mahu Men is a chance for new readers to meet Kimo, and for fans to delve more deeply into his world.

In Dog We Trust by Neil Plakcy
Reviewed by Kathy K.

Once again Neil Plakcy has proven that he’s an author with a wide range of storytelling ability. In Dog We Trust is a very well-crafted mystery that kept me guessing up until Steve figured out where things were going.

Between Steve and Rochester the killer(s) didn’t stand a chance.  I really liked the flow of the story even with the back-and-forth from past to present and back again. At no time was I lost or confused as to what was happening and we learned a lot about how Steve ended up owning his murdered neighbor’s dog.

I liked Steve a lot; he made a mistake for which he paid the price, but I could understand his reasons for what he did. Neil Plakcy did a fantastic job letting us get to know Steve inside out. He’s a likeable character and I especially liked that, even having to rebuild his entire life, Steve wasn’t blaming anyone for what he’d done. He took responsibility and was doing what he could to build something new. Not his fault that a murder mystery fell practically into his lap.  Although personally I wouldn’t take the actions that he did; but then I’m not much for risk taking and I have to admit that my curiosity rarely gets the better of me. Steve sure couldn’t say the same… but it makes for an excellent story.

If you’re a fan of Neil Plakcy’s and have read only his Mahu series, or perhaps his sexy romances then I challenge you to look past what you know and check out In Dog We Trust. This is a totally enjoyable read; Neil definitely knows how to entertain!

Truthful Change by Jane Davitt & Alexa Snow Reviwed by Kathy K.

Truthful Change ended up having so many surprises in store I just could not bear to put it down. And I have to, once again, congratulate a writing team for creating such a seamless and whole story that I would often forget that it was written by two people. Jane Davitt and Alexa Snow have written a story that flows so flawlessly and is really told with one voice; personally I don’t understand how these authors do it, but I’m so very glad that they do. And you better believe that my reading future includes Ms. Davitt and Ms. Snow! There’s only one thing that I couldn’t really get my mind around and that is the title… I never really could fit it in with the story, but that’s a very minor point. Back to my review….

Karl, at first glance, does not seem to be the hero type. But as I got to know more about him, who he was, I could see that he’s pretty much a what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of guy. He’s up front and honest even if he’s more than a little blunt. But he’s trying to learn to live without the adrenaline rush that he’s so used to.
Fortunately for him, his new gardener’s not only the type to appeal to him, he’s a surprising challenge… and, although Karl likes this to go his own way, he is always up for discovering just what makes this young man tick.

Adam is far more than he appears; that’s par for the course. But, at the same time, we discover that he, while trying to be someone else, lets a lot of his real self out… of course Karl is just the type of man that brings out Adam’s hidden desires and needs. Adam has far more to learn, especially about himself, than he could have ever anticipated. And it ends up his work is the least of it.

And that is part and parcel why the story is sooo addictive; you never really know what’s going to be coming around the corner.
There are many different kinds of tension and Jane Davitt and Alexa Snow have tapped into all of them and fed it to us a bit at a time. Although there were times I wanted to have a little more on the spoon – NOW – they get me glued to the pages.
Definitely a character driven story, with plenty of action – okay, yes I mean *that* kind – but there’s also an element of Action / Adventure and a dash of Thriller. Absolutely lovely!

Book Teaser: A rose by any other name… But when you don’t know someone’s real name, can you really fall in love with them? Karl’s an ex-mercenary with more secrets than scars, but his shy oddly sexy gardener, Adam, has even more than he does.

Book Description: Karl Blake’s good at a lot of things: killing bad guys, rescuing hostages…and looting priceless diamonds, but when a bullet ends his career as a mercenary he discovers that he’s really bad at living in a huge house with nothing to do.
A shy, oddly sexy gardener with an unexpected liking for rough sex seems just what the doctor ordered for his boredom. But Adam’s got secrets that make Karl’s seems mundane, and if the two of them are going to find a future together, there’s a lot more to deal with than dandelions in the lawn.

With the past and the present combining to push them apart, betrayal, hurt, and mistrust around every corner, the two of them need to focus less on labels and more on what they are to each other.

Because a rose by any other name…

Mobry’s Dick by K.Z. Snow Reviwed by Theresa

This was a very interesting book but sadly, not as good as I thought it would be. I wanted more details on the mystery of what happened to Alain Mobry; that was what really intrigued me. We do eventually find out what happened to him but not really how.

The relationship between Cameron and Paul just didn’t ring true for me. It felt very contrived, and the resolution of the conflict was so anticlimactic that when it hit the end, I was left a little dumbfounded thinking, “This is it?”

K.Z. Snow is a great author but I just didn’t find Mobry’s Dick as enjoyable as I have so many of her other books.

Theresa
**********
Readers Note: While this is a contemporary story it does start out in the late 19th Century and then we get views from the past in the form of flashback through out the story.

Teaser: While Cameron inches his way out of the closet, Paul struggles to free himself from a sugar daddy who’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants. Romance binds the unlikely pair as they tackle the mystery of the legendary automaton: Mobry’s Dick.

Description: Late-19th-century illusionist Alain Mobry, a short, homely man with a clubfoot, is known primarily for his elaborate clockwork automata. But his private life is even more complex than his mechanisms. Mobry is a homosexual and a member of the Green Carnation Club, a secret gathering place for gay men of the theater. He’s also dabbled in “real” magick. There are hints of it in an illusion called the Fountain of Youth–in which a beautiful youth called Puck, never seen in public, emerges from a diorama and disappears back into it–and in a profane automaton Alain has devised specifically to entertain the Green Carnation’s members. He would like his creation to be for one man in particular, a fellow magician with whom he’s infatuated. But he never gets the chance to offer his gift…

Over 100 years later, a peculiar item turns up at an outdoor flea market. It looks something like a blunt-nosed artillery shell to Cameron Waters, the young real estate broker who buys the piece out of curiosity. It looks like the legendary automaton known as Mobry’s Dick to Paul Patrillo, a graduate student who’s been researching the history of stage magic.

While Cameron inches his way out of the closet and Paul struggles to free himself from a sugar daddy who’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants, the unlikely pair grow closer as they tackle the mystery of Mobry’s Dick.

Dead Reckoning by Trista Ann Michaels Reviewed by Kathy K.

I like Brian, Nick and Kathryn; they have a very interesting dynamic, to say the least. She’s been friends with them for a long time, even when Brian and Nick were involved in a ménage relationship with her best friend Lisa. Upon Lisa’s murder, however, the lifelong friendship between Nick and Brian was torn apart and I never really did understand why. But they each kept their friendships with Kathryn alive and somewhere along the line they fell in love with her and she with them.

This is where the story line began to fall apart for me; I’ve read quite a few ménage stories and some of them are so wonderfully done you know there is no other way for the characters to have their HEA. Unfortunately I was never as convinced with the ménage aspect in Dead Reckoning. I don’t know exactly why it didn’t ring true, but I think it’s because I felt that it was somewhat forced.

Then there’s the serial killer aspect to the story. It was okay, but again I never really understood just why the killer behaved as he did. There was a vague reference to something in his past but that was it; overall I found it a little disappointing that there was so little background.
But the secret that Kathryn kept hidden—that was very interesting.

All in all, I liked Trista Ann Michaels’ Dead Reckoning, but loved it? Unfortunately no. This will, however, not stop me from reading other stories by this author; sometimes it’s a particular story with which I can’t connect.
Trista Ann Michaels did keep me reading and that says something. And as I said I’ll be looking for other work by this author.

Fugitive Color by Z.A. Maxfield Reviewed by Kathy K.

Fugitive Color is available for purchase at Loose Id.

Z.A. Maxfield is one of those authors who write utterly captivating romances, and this is another demonstration of her ability. Fugitive Color is a different story from her other books that I’ve read, but I revel in those differences. This is very much a suspense and mystery story, but with a wonderful romance tied in. I’m a big fan of mystery / suspense stories and when there’s a romance included I’m a very happy reader.
I loved that Sumner was finally able to meet the man he’s had serious crush on for a long while… and even better, he finds that the man is everything he could have ever hoped for. It’s not too hard to understand how quickly he finds himself falling in love with the older man, but it’s wonderful that his feelings are returned. And for Max the attraction he feels for, and the beginning of a relationship with, Sumner is a life-saver… or rather something that he can hold onto while everything else heads into crazy territory.

The denouement was a surprise, but I’m not one of those that really tries to figure out “who”; I was quite content to follow along, and get super-steamed at the detective in charge. But the story ends well, as any romance should, and Z.A. Maxfield now has another book on my re-read list.

**********

Book Teaser: When Max’s neighbor goes missing, the police think he’s a murderer. Max isn’t sure they’re wrong. Sumner knows Max isn’t killer, but he’s not sure the man he’s given himself to is entirely sane. But without his faith, love is just a fugitive color.

Book Description: Max Lancaster’s neighbor—his muse, the young ballerina Elena—has gone missing. Between secrets from his past and the fact that he’s altering his paintings in his sleep, Max is worried that he’s lost his mind. By the time forensic artist Sumner Ellison arrives as part of the investigation even Max can see himself in the role of “person of interest.”

Sumner Ellison doesn’t believe that Max killed Elena, yet he isn’t certain Max is entirely sane. Sumner offers Max oblivion in bed and unflinching honesty. Max takes what Sumner offers, losing himself in the younger man’s body while hiding his heart from Sumner’s love.

When doubt pulls them apart, it takes the all of Max’s passion and the purity of Sumner’s faith to find answers create a love that won’t fade away over time.

Survival Instinct by Roxy Harte Reviewed by Kathy K.

Survival Instinct is available for Purchase at Loose Id.

I quite enjoyed Survival Instinct and I really liked Brian and Hawk, together and individually. They were definitely attracted to each other even though both of them were somewhat raw from betrayals at the hands of loved ones. Yet they couldn’t deny or fight their feelings, or the strength of their mutual desire.

The story was good and, filled with action and great characters, I practically raced through the book. But at the same time I was fighting the urge to say to Brian and Hawk, “It’s all happening too fast.”
In a way it was; it’d only been a few months since the death of Brian’s twin brother and husband. And Hawk himself was still feeling hurt from the abrupt leaving of his lover.

There was also a lot going on in a relatively short story; Survival Instinct is only 119 pages long. Ms. Harte’s story is jam-packed with so much happening that, at times, I felt as though I was being taken along for a very fast ride… and I wanted to enjoy the scenery a bit more.

But overall, if you can sit back and let yourself enjoy the fast pace and can accept the speed with how quickly the relationship between Hawk and Brian developed then you’ve got yourself a story that will entertain.
And sometimes it’s just nice to go along with the ride!

Kathy K.

Book Teaser: Brian’s lost everything. First his husband to his twin brother, then both of them to a car crash that claimed their lives. Now he’s on the run, not even sure he wants to live, but a sexy park ranger and a deadly mystery awaken his survival instinct.

Book Description: Days after discovering his husband was sleeping with his twin brother, museum curator Brian Van Zant’s faced with another shocking loss. Both men are killed in a car accident, leaving him no answers, no closure. No chance to say, “I hate you,” or “I love you,” and not sure which he’d have said if given the chance. Now, Brian’s running away from home. Just running, without a plan or a destination.

Tobias Red Hawk is a Park Ranger in Montana, where being out of the closet still seems like a dream. After saving the life of blatantly gay and thoroughly attractive Brian, he begins to question his conviction of staying secretly gay. But before he can face his own identity crisis, there is a mystery to be solved at the top of the Bitterroot mountain range and the answers may lie in the myths of his childhood. And when Hawk’s past returns to kill him, both men discover there’s nothing like facing death up close to make a man find his survival instinct.
