Lessons in Love and Other Things with DC Juris

Hi there! ::waves:: I’m DC Juris – I write GLBTQ romance (contemporary and fantasy) and I’ll be your guest host today! I was looking over a list of blog topics just now, and one of them was “things you’ve learned from your characters.”  The more I thought about the topic, the more I knew I had to write about it. You see, I’ve learned a helluva lot from my guys and gals!

From Dean and Rick in “Sundae Surprise,” I learned to pay more attention to the people around me. Sometimes, the best things in life are sitting right under your nose, only you’re too busy looking for them to actually see them. Also, I learned that food isn’t just for eating anymore!

From Jinsu and Tristan in The Sky People Trilogy (“Dream Come True,” “The Door Under the Bridge,” and “Follow His Heart”), I learned love truly knows no bounds. Would I do what Tristan and Jinsu did for each other, for my husband? In a heartbeat. Without even thinking about it. I’d be worried and scared and uncertain, but if it meant spending my life with the love of my life, I’d go to those lengths and more.

From Brandon and David in “A Good Bargain,” I learned we’re only as young as we feel, and it doesn’t take much to feel younger if we try. And of course there’s the reinforcement of good things come to those who wait.

From Evan, Drake, and Mike in “Perfect Christmas,” I learned that sometimes, you just have to trust your partner. Sometimes they know what you want, before you do, and if they’re willing to give it to you, they’re worth their weight in gold.

From all my characters in “Simply Smut,” I learned that love truly is universal. No matter your race, gender, orientation, whathaveyou – everyone just wants the same thing. Love. Pleasure. Fulfillment. Happiness. Acceptance for who we are and the ability to pursue our dreams. Underneath our clothes, we’re all the same: just naked humans.

Finally, I’ve learned a very important lesson from my characters Marcus and Charlie, in an upcoming release (slated for September 2nd) called “Relearning the Ropes.” From these two wonderful men I’ve learned that we’re all better than our circumstances and environments. No matter our upbringning or our pasts, we can work towards our goals and achieve them. We can be better than we are, if we try. And that, perhaps, is the most important lesson of all.
