Yowza! My first reaction to this story is not printable, hence the tamer opening.  But my heavens… really, I just keep wanting to exclaim out loud ‘This is one f…in’ HOT story.’ Actually my original response was ‘Holy F—! HOT? You have NO idea!’ And I rarely, but rarely use the f bomb… really! But really after reading Marcus and Zach’s story there really wasn’t any other available response.  And it was all in a good way of course.  This may only be J.R. Patrick’s second book but it, like the first, is so polished, so… mature; I’m saying this poorly, but this author’s first two books have completely blown me away.

After the first book—Only You—I was a major fan; now? Ms. Patrick I promise I’m not a dangerous stalker… really! Just keep writing your wonderful stories and I will remain a tame and contented stalk…er, fan.

Having said all that let me tell you just why Slow Burn caused this reaction.  Even at only 38 pages the characters were not only fully developed and brought to life, but their story was extremely satisfyingly complete… well, except for the fact that I’d like to follow them for a few years, just to make sure y’know.

Then there are the two men whose story this is; and a steamier, more sizzling read you won’t quickly find either.

Marcus… hmm, what to say about this scientist who does, indeed, know himself very well: It’s understanding other people, primarily Zach, where he falls down on the job… so to speak. Marcus knows that casual sex isn’t something in which he can indulge; he’s just not made that way. But if anyone ever tempted him to go where he’d never gone before, it would be Zachary Fischer. This sexy-as-sin technician has been more than a little tempting almost since Marcus began working at the lab but since Marcus is only there temporarily… well, the length of his stay is at the crux of the matter.  He knows that he can’t love then leave Zach… no way, no how.

Zach, on the other hand, knows just what he wants and Marcus is it.  Good thing that Zach is so patient ‘cause this is one pursuit that took a long, long time! I really love that Zach is not shy and definitely not about to let his sexy scientist leave without giving them a chance.  And he can see a bigger picture that Marcus, caught up in his own mind, doesn’t even know exists.  But I guess that’s why scientists like Marcus need technicians like Zach, and not just in the lab either. *grin*

I really don’t want to say anymore about Slow Burn; anything I say now would ruin the story and this book is way too good for me to spoil the storytelling of the wonderful J.R. Patrick; anyway she tells it sooo much better than I ever could.

So treat yourself to one sizzlin’ sexy and heartwarming romance… and be prepared to find a way to keep the heat in check ‘cause this is one REALLY HOT book. Maybe then you’ll understand my initial reaction when I finished reading Slow Burn… and why J.R. Patrick is very high on my list of favourite authors.
