Dee Dee Day by Mykola Dementiuk Reviewed by Kathy K.

Let me start by saying that I did not want to put this book down!
This is the first time that I’ve read anything by Mykola Dementiuk and, while by no means ordinary, there is something very enthralling about the story. The events detailed take place, for the most part, in 1972 in New York and the language is vastly different from more recently-set contemporaries that I’ve read.
In Dee Dee Day, it is the characters that are the attraction; large age differences, references to pedophilia and an overall edge may initially make one second-guess reading the story, but there is a complexity and a freshness that make this, in my opinion, a book not to miss.
Dee Dee is an amazing person and her life has been anything but easy; but she’s been true to herself and that, in my opinion, is a major part of why the story works so well. Mr. Dementiuk brought both Bill and Dee Dee to such vivid life that I was easily caught up in their story. And the differences did not affect my enjoyment one whit.
Not your usual, run-of-the mill romance, but it is a story that left me pondering the improvements, while still limited they may be, to the rights of those who are not to be found in the mainstream. We’ve come a long way, but we still have a much longer way to go.
